The Women in Engineering ProActive Network Event Wrap-Up

The Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) recently hosted their annual Change Leader Forum conference in Denver, Colorado. For over 25 years, WEPAN has leveraged research and best practices to propel the inclusion of women in the field of engineering. With a focus on transforming culture in engineering education, WEPAN’s network connects advocates who actively pursue strategies and implement solutions to increase the participation, retention and success of women in engineering from college all the way to executive leadership.

WEPAN’s 2017 Change Leader Forum provided a place to learn, share, network and collaborate with leaders, experts, and advocates of gender inclusion in engineering higher education. Creating the Mindset for Action was this year’s Forum theme, which aimed to inspire attendees to take action and make real progress in advancing cultural change and responsibility within their own organizations and institutions.

Throughout the three days, over 200 conference participants had the opportunity to attend numerous sessions related to diversity and inclusion.  Also offered were four different pre-conference workshops that attendees opted to join based on their areas of interest.

The following are examples of specific subject areas that were covered at the Change Leader Forum:

  • Hidden Barriers in the Workplace: Equipping Young Women with the Skills They Need to Thrive in Industry
  • Understanding & Initiating Advocates & Allies Programs in Support of Women & Gender Equity
  • Speaking Up to Bias: Bystander Intervention to Bias in the Academy
  • Women of Color: ImpACTing STEM’s Past, Present, and Future

In addition to the multiple sessions and meals with keynote speakers, WEPAN made sure that attendees had ample opportunity to network and connect with fellow, like-minded proponents through various networking events.

WEPAN also selected award recipients based on nominations from colleagues and peers. Eleven different awards honored key individuals, programs, and corporations for accomplishments that underscore WEPAN’s mission through extraordinary service, significant achievement, model programs, and exemplary work environments.

Information on next year’s conference will be available at www.wepan.org once confirmed. Stay tuned!
