WEPAN Seeks Applicants for Executive Director

Women in Engineering ProActive Network



The Women in Engineering ProActive (WEPAN) Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership, direction and guidance of WEPAN’s activities, members, and member organizations. This will be accomplished through establishing and executing major goals and objectives for the organization, while recommending and implementing policies established by the board of directors. The ED will continuously analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of all organization operations including the funding model, organizational structure and personnel. Fundraising, outreach and marketing are three key areas.  S/he will coordinate major activities through subordinates, consultants, and member-volunteers. The position requires proactive management, sound fiscal judgment, and a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.  The Executive Director represents WEPAN and its mission to regulatory bodies, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters, and the general public.  The Executive Director will work collaboratively, think strategically, and act responsibly to ensure long-term success of the organization.


WEPAN is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1990 to be a catalyst for change to enhance the success of women in the engineering professions. WEPAN is the leading champion in North America for leveraging research and promising practices to propel the inclusion of women in the field of engineering. WEPAN’s network connects over 1000 advocates who actively pursue strategies and implement solutions to increase participation, retention and success of women and other underrepresented groups in engineering from college to executive leadership. Our members are passionate and bring their talents to this goal.

WEPAN is driven by the conviction that engineering must fully embrace diversity and inclusion to meet the demands of today’s innovation and performance-driven business culture. Creating academic and workplace cultures for students, employees, and faculty that promote inclusion and diversity in engineering higher education is critical. Everyone can contribute to building cultures that value diversity by working together with WEPAN’s committed network of well-informed leaders and advocates. 


WEPAN generates just under $1 million per year in revenue and has approximately 1,000 members consisting of academic institutions, corporate partners, and individuals.  The WEPAN Board of Directors is composed of 15 voting members and they set direction, assist in ensuring resources, engage in outreach, and provide oversight.  There are several committees in the WEPAN structure such as Finance, Membership, and Awards, along with a Conference Committee.  Historically, the majority of revenue has come from grants, followed by membership and fund raising. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director shall

  • Provide visionary and exemplary leadership for WEPAN
  • Develop funding mechanisms such that financial resources are available for WEPAN to carry out the organization’s plans
  • Establish and maintain policies and guidelines to ensure the financial health and fiscal viability of the organization including submitting annual budgets, monthly financial statements and projections
  • Act as the spokesperson and key representative for WEPAN at the national level.
  • Be responsible to and report directly to the WEPAN President and ultimately to the WEPAN Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with the Board and its leaders to provide strategic direction for WEPAN and translate it into actionable goals
  • Execute board-approved policies and programs
  • Serve as the Ex Officio member of the Board of Directors
  • Attend all Board Meetings
  • Establish and maintain positive and constructive relationships with WEPAN’s members and constituencies, as well as any of WEPAN’s functional areas or committees
  • Interact collaboratively with the members, volunteers and other persons and organizations benefiting WEPAN’s mission and to assure its goals are met effectively and efficiently
  • Determine the most effective personnel model to carry out WEPAN’s mission
  • Hire/secure competent and effective personnel
  • Effectively lead and manage the personnel and maintain positive morale
  • Build national visibility and ensure internal and external relationships are nurtured
  • Work to improve WEPAN’s governance, consistent with best practices for not-for-profit organizations
  • Perform additional executive duties consistent with the foregoing as designated from time to time by the Board



To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform essential duties with a high level of competence. 


 Personal Characteristics – A successful Executive Director must be

  • Able to lead, inspire, and motivate others through relationship building, presentations, and representation
  • Accomplished in developing and executing plans to secure financial resources to sustain an organization
  • Confident with a positive demeanor that engenders respect Ethical and must demonstrate high personal integrity
  • Self-driven, motivated, and regulated
  • Accomplished in strategic thinking, capable of synthesizing emerging events and trends into a perspective relevant to WEPAN and its mission 
  • Knowledgeable of higher education issues as well as industry issues, and able to transition between the two
  • Knowledgeable of gender equity issues in STEM broadly
  • Able to communicate with and inspire WEPAN’s core audiences of academic leaders, faculty, corporate leaders and influencers
  • Understanding and able to make connections as well as to leverage existing relationships
  • Able to produce research and supporting data that creates value for WEPAN, its members, and its mission
  • Able to translate research to practice for varying audiences
  • Skillful at writing and speaking English in a persuasive and positive manner
  • Clearly understand personal limitations and how to supplement efforts to manage or mitigate these limitations  
  • Proficient in an electronic work environment and able to use available tools for communications, information management, and analysis



 An advanced degree, preferably an earned doctorate, in a field within WEPAN’s sphere of interest



  •  Minimum of 10 years of progression in full-time leadership and management responsibility in complex organizations
  •  Proven ability to secure major long-term funding for an organization
  •  Proven track record of providing high quality of organization administration
  •  Demonstrated successful grant writing experience and budget management
  •  Knowledgeable of the history, research, and its applications to women in engineering and computing


Additional qualifications not required, but beneficial

  •  Knowledgeable of initiatives and stakeholders in the field of women in engineering and computing
  •  Past or current employment at an institution of higher education or a non-profit
  •  Experience in professional society leadership positions


Work Environment

The Executive Director could work remotely from any location in the United States.  The Executive Director would need to maintain contact and provide administrative guidance to other WEPAN personnel, officers, and board members.  The Board of Advisors meets quarterly in person.  Travel will be provided to these meetings as well as other meetings and/or events where the Executive Director’s presence is considered essential.  Other meetings and committees meet remotely.  WEPAN is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization currently registered as a charitable organization in the state of Colorado.
