Dr. Karen Zunkel
In her role as Director for Undergraduate Programs and Academic Quality, Karen Zunkel provides leadership on broad range of institutional initiatives and committees focused on the academic experience and success of undergraduate students. Examples of these responsibilities include service on the Regents Committee for Educational Relations, leadership of task forces associated with early college credit and open option students, and liaison roles for committee such as the University Academic Advising Committee, Academic Standards and Admission Committee, and University Career Services Council. She also provides institutional leadership for academic program reviews, student outcomes assessment, and institutional accreditation. Prior to this position, Zunkel served nine years with a split appointment, half-time as Director of the Program for Women in Science and Engineering and half-time as Director for Undergraduate Programs.
Zunkel began her Iowa State career in January 1991 as a non-tenure track faculty member in the College of Engineering and served for Manager of Engineering Student Services for five years. She has also taught for the School of Education at Iowa State University. In 2010 she was recognized for her service to Iowa State University and the state of Iowa with the Iowa Board of Regents Award for Staff Excellence. Prior to coming to Iowa State, Zunkel was a product engineer and sales engineer for AT&T and subsidiaries. She has twice served a national leadership role within Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN), as Director of Membership (2004-2007) and a current three-year term as president-elect, president, and past-president (2012-2015).
Zunkel earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University in 1983, her M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1989, and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (Higher Education) in 2002.
