Dr. Beverly Louie is the Director of Teaching and Learning Initiatives in the Broadening Opportunity through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) Center at University of Colorado Boulder. The BOLD Center is committed to a diverse learning community with its mission to foster academic excellence for an inclusive body of students to succeed at CU Boulder’s College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). Prior to this, she was the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) director for seven years. She has a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from Oxford University, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, and over fifteen years of engineering practice in industry and government research laboratories.
Dr. Louie teaches design courses for and conducts engineering education research aimed at first-year engineering students. In the past few years she has examined the experiences of women in the college through surveys and focus groups. From these research findings, she works to implement strategies to increase the performance and retention of students, especially for women, students of color, low income and first-generation college attendees. She developed and directs the college’s drop-in tutoring program and co-directs a BOLD summer bridge experience for a diverse group of incoming first-year students that is focused on instilling a sense of community along with bolstering academic success strategies. Dr. Louie is revamping the introduction to engineering course that she will co-teach this fall. As the past WIEP director, Dr. Louie taught summer design camps and coordinated numerous on-campus visit days for hundreds of middle school and high school girls. She helped implement women’s manufacturing skills workshops and mentoring experiences for engineering women students.
Dr. Louie has been an active member of WEPAN since 2004 and served as the conference program chair in 2008 and 2009 and as the co-chair of the WEPAN Knowledge Center Committee from 2010-2012. She also was the program chair for the University of Colorado’s four-campus conference called the CU Women Succeeding Symposium in 2008 and 2009. Over the past several years, Dr. Louie has given workshops and presentations at both the WEPAN and American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) conferences, and she has been an invited speaker at the ASEE Engineering Deans Institute. Currently, she is a co-principal investigator on an NSF REE grant (Inclusive Excellence to Bolster Diversity — A System of Capacity-Building Pathways To and Through Engineering). She is also part of the CU Boulder team that is implementing the NSF ENGAGE retention strategies, focusing on spatial visualization skills workshops. Dr. Louie has also served on grant and program review committees.
