Academic Leaders Consortium

The WEPAN Academic Leaders Consortium includes deans and academic leaders from institutions across North America who are committed to creating academic environments that will propel diversity across students and faculty. The Academic Leaders Consortium understands that WEPAN’s targeted, research-based content and the intellectual vitality of its network can add tremendous value in achieving institutional diversity and inclusion goals.

Research shows that the environment in which engineering students, faculty and professionals operate can have a positive effect on the retention of women and minorities in engineering. Together, we must address the engineering culture in higher education, in order to make significant advances in the percentage of women and other underrepresented groups in engineering.

It is the role of academic leaders to ensure the academic and social climate in engineering is a level playing field for women, underrepresented men, AND the majority white male groups. WEPAN is here to help.

WEPAN is a Strategic Advantage for our Academic Partners

Deans and academic leaders who engage with WEPAN are committed change leaders, and provide the infrastructure necessary to propel systemic transformation of engineering culture. WEPAN supports your leadership in shaping the success of all engineering faculty, students and alumnae/i:

  • Faculty development webinars that are part of WEPAN’s NSF-funded Engineering Inclusive Teaching illustrate how WEPAN partners with academic leaders to create systemic changes in educational methods and climates so that more students are engaged, motivated and retained in engineering.

  • Through active online discussions and the Women in STEM Knowledge Center, WEPAN’s network shares knowledge, current research and strategies for attracting, recruiting and retaining women faculty and students.

  • Since 1990, WEPAN’s annual conference -- now called the Change Leader Forum -- as convened over 4,000 faculty, researchers, policy makers and industry leaders.

Consortium members designate 3-4 key administrators/faculty/staff within their colleges to liaise with the WEPAN network. Assembling a diverse group of colleagues that have responsibility over diversity and inclusion, student success, faculty affairs and college outreach ensures that you get the most out of your WEPAN network and partnership.

The Academic Leaders Consortium connects virtually through an online community and meets once a year at WEPAN’s annual Change Leader Forum, the premier gathering of leaders from higher education, industry, government and nonprofit sectors who are working to promote diversity and inclusion in engineering.

Year round, WEPAN -- with its body of research and practice -- is there for the Academic Leaders Consortium. The time is right to build an engineering workforce that reflects the rich diversity of America and it is everyone’s responsibility to do so. WEPAN’s network is the catalyst, foundation and energy that propels this change.
