2-hour Morning Workshop (9-11am)

Gender Competence: A New Model for Men and Women to Work Effectively with Differences and Create a Culture of Inclusion

This workshop will introduce the Gender Competence model from Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering Graduate Program Core Course: Gender and Engineering. Gender Competence draws on Social Linguistics, Cultural Competence, Brain Science and Business Leadership to dispel bias in perceptions of competence and to identify, articulate and utilize new competencies that increase inclusion, productivity, innovation and promotabiity of women and men. This model will cover layers of understanding with guidelines, but no absolutes for men and women:

  • Hardware/Brain Science: Human over HardwiringOperating System/Gender Culture
  • Lenses/Paradigms: Individualistic and Relational
  • Software “Apps”/Gender Individualistic and Relational Competencies, Communication and Leadership Styles


2-hour Afternoon Workshop (2-4pm)

Working Inside a BIGGER Box: Using Connection and Creativity to Inspire Future Engineers
Presenter: Shawna Fletcher, The Ohio State University

This workshop provides information on the development and use of creative concepts in engineering.  Audience participation is required for small group-work, hands-on activities, group presentations and dialogue.  Audience members will leave with an increased understanding of the interconnection between multiple disciplines and how to implement best-practices within engineering programs.

Workshop Description:

Innovation Happens!  Thinking creatively is a skill that’s needed in our engineering workforce.  According to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the public’s perception of engineering, lack of diversity in the engineering field, and standing of the U.S. engineering workforce are factors that impact the U.S. as a global leader.  For the U.S. to be competitive, engineering must be viewed as a creative, limitless, and challenging endeavor that requires students to apply traditional knowledge in unique ways.  Encouraging a student-centered learning environment and actively engaging students through creative thinking exercises are program elements that are required to develop innovative solutions and critical workforce skills.

Workshop:  The proposed workshop is a two-hour workshop that will provide information on why creativity in engineering is needed; the difference between creativity vs. innovation; and small group-work and hands-on activities will be conducted.  The conference theme addressed is Thriving.


  • An increased understanding of the interconnection of science and engineering-related concepts
  • To explore the effective use of multi- or cross- disciplinary topics to promote engineering as an attractive career choice
  • Participants will explore how to apply concepts in any future engineering program or initiative
  • Hands-on activities require participants to use their own experiences to present engineering as a creative endeavor

Presenter:  Shawna Fletcher is currently the Interim Director for the Women in Engineering (WiE) Program at The Ohio State University.  She has worked for almost two decades as an administrator to promote engineering and the applied sciences to women and underrepresented students. Shawna’s leadership includes founding member of the National Underwater Robotics Challenge (NURC) and President of the Arizona Promoters of Applied Science in Education (APASE) In addition to her interest in science and engineering, Shawna is a business owner, teacher and freelance cellist. Her musical accomplishments comprise 30 years of symphonic and solo playing experience. Shawna holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Microbiology and Physiological Psychology with minor degrees in Chemistry and Women’s Studies from Arizona State University. Shawna also has a Master of Science Degree in Bioengineering from Arizona State University.
