WEPAN Welcomes the FY18 Board of Directors

WEPAN is pleased to announce its 2017-2018 Board of Directors

The WEPAN Board of Directors is comprised of volunteers who are dedicated advocates for inclusion and diversity in engineering. These individuals bring their passion, background and leadership to WEPAN, helping to set WEPAN's strategic course, and guiding WEPAN toward achieving its mission. The following members will take office July 1, 2017.


Amy Freeman, President
Assistant Dean of Engineering Diversity, The Pennsylvania State University

Dr. Amy Freeman holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering and a PhD in Workforce Education. This unusual combination has provided her with a professional skill set that combines the technical and the social sciences. She has been an advocate for STEM educational access and global collaboration for over two decades. In that time, she has developed a wide range of programming and success strategies designed to serve STEM students. She is a proponent of work-life balance, and is the author of Stress Less: 10 Balancing Insights on Work and Life.

Teri Reed, Immediate Past-President
Assistant Vice President for Research & Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Cincinnati 

Dr. Teri Reed is the Assistant Vice President for Research for the University of Cincinnati. An advocate for research-informed approaches to engineering education, curricular reform, equity, cultural humility, and policy, as well as student recruitment and retention efforts, Dr. Reed has made significant contributions nationally. Dr. Reed received a BS in Petroleum Engineering and also an MBA from the University of Oklahoma. She earned her PhD in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University.


Linda Katehi, President-Elect
Chancellor Emerita and Distinguished University Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of California Davis

Dr. Linda Katehi’s work in electronic circuit design has led to national and international awards as both an educator and a technical leader. In 2009, Dr. Katehi became the sixth chancellor of UC Davis, and the first woman to hold this post. As a new faculty member and throughout her career Katehi focused on expanding research opportunities for undergraduate students and improving the education and professional experience of graduate students. Dr. Katehi earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, and a master’s and doctorate in electrical engineering from UCLA.


Laura Bistrek, Secretary
Director of the Diversity in Engineering Center, University of Dayton

As Director of the University of Dayton's Diversity in Engineering Center, Ms. Laura Bistrek leads efforts to foster an inclusive community for all students, faculty and staff in the School of Engineering. Prior to her appointment as director, Ms. Bistrek served as program manager for the Women and Minority Engineering Programs. She joined the University of Dayton after working nine years as a project manager/engineer for Tetra Tech. She is a licensed professional engineer and holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Dayton and an MBA from the University of Louisville.

Deborah Trytten, Treasurer
President’s Associates Presidential Professor and Assoc. Professor of Computer Science; Adjunct Assoc. Professor of Women & Gender Studies, University of Oklahoma

Dr. Deborah A. Trytten is President’s Associates Presidential Professor and Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Women’s and Gender Studies. Her current research interests include analyzing the social construction of gender and ethnic/racial diversity in engineering education and undergraduate education in computer science. She received a BA in physics and mathematics from Albion College. Trytten earned two MS degrees in applied mathematics and computer science and a PhD in computer science from Michigan State University.



Lora Leigh Chrystal
Director - Program for Women in Science & Engineering, Iowa State University

As Director of the Program for Women in Science and Engineering, Ms. Lora Leigh Chrystal has oversight for all outreach, recruitment and retention programs serving over 12,000 students in the state of Iowa each year.  Prior to her role as director, Lora Leigh spent over 13 years building recruitment and retention programs for women in STEM fields. She is ABD in the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Program at Iowa State University with a specific research interest in the retention of STEM women.  Prior to her work at Iowa State University, Lora Leigh worked as a Research Technician for the Human Genome Sequencing center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

Lee Ann Schwope Cochran
Vice President of Business Development and Sales, Battelle Memorial Institute (Battelle)

Ms. Lee Ann Schwope Cochran leads strategic corporate initiatives within Battelle's Contract Research Business, which covers a wide portfolio in the energy & environment, health & analytics, national security, homeland security & public safety, and pharmaceutical & medical devices industry segments.  Her office also supports joint R&D/strategic sourcing of external S&T innovations for Battelle's government and military clients, and commercializing Battelle developed innovations. Ms. Cochran is a Materials Science & Engineering alumna of The Ohio State University.

DiOnetta Jones Crayton
Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education & Director, Office of Minority Education, MIT

Ms. DiOnetta Jones Crayton serves as Associate Dean and in her role has worked to promote the retention and success of students from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented minority groups. She has acquired positions with several educational and technical organizations across the nation and holds affiliations with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dean Crayton received her MA in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA.

Nandika D'Souza
Regents Professor of Mechanical & Energy Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering; Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, University of North Texas

Embedded in Dr. Nandika Anne D’Souza's teaching, research and service activities is a goal of increasing intellectual, gender and racial diversity in engineering leadership. In her capacity as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, she has integrated SHPE, NSBE and SWE together with cross-department honor societies to form a Diversity and Excellence in Engineering Initiative at UNT advised by industry and academia. Dr. D’Souza received a B.E. in polymer engineering from the University of Pune, an M.S. in materials engineering from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University.

Roger Green
Associate Professor & Undergraduate Program Coordinator, North Dakota State University

Dr. Roger Green teaches and conducts research in signal processing at NDSU's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  Since its inception in 2008, Dr. Green has been a lead member of the NDSU Advance FORWARD Advocates, a group of male faculty dedicated to effecting departmental and institutional change in support of gender equality.  As part of this group, he regularly trains men, at NDSU and other institutions, to better serve as gender equity allies.  Dr. Green received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wyoming.

Julie Martin
Associate Professor, Department of Engineering & Science Education, Clemson University

Dr. Julie Martin's work focuses on advancing knowledge of social interactions that influence students' decisions to enter and persist in engineering and science, particularly underrepresented students. She leads the Social Capital Research Group (SoCap) - a team of engineering and science education researchers who are passionate about understanding ways social connections help students realize and achieve academic and career goals related to STEM fields. She received her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Virginia Tech.

Lance C. Pérez
Interim Dean, College of Engineering, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Dr. Lance C. Pérez has been on the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) since 1996, and is currently Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering. In his former position as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs as well as Dean of Graduate Studies., Dr. Pérez had been responsible for faculty and leadership development, promotion and tenure, instructional technology and classroom facilities improvements, and graduate education. He served as a program manager in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation from 2008 to 2010. He received his MS and PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.

Jennifer Roach
Associate Director of Research & Development, Procter & Gamble

Ms. Jennifer Roach’s 26 year career has spanned multiple consumer product segments, including Baby Care, Feminine Care, Health & Beauty and Home Care. She is known for growing top technical talent, with a passion for activating the potential in people by discovering and developing their innate gifts. She founded and sponsors the Prowess women’s network which has improved retention of engineering women in highly technical careers, resulting in advancement of women in process engineering careers. She earned degrees from Purdue University (B.S. in Chemical Engineering) and University of Phoenix (MBA in Technology Management) and is an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, Six Sigma Black Belt and Basadur Creative Facilitator.


Sonya Smith
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Howard University

Dr. Sonya T. Smith joined the Howard University faculty in 1995 and is the first tenured female faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Smith also serves as Principal Investigator for the Howard University ADVANCE-IT (HU ADVANCE-IT) award from NSF. HU ADVANCE-IT has enabled Howard University to develop an innovative and strategic model for institutional transformation that increases the number of female leaders in the STEM disciplines. Dr. Smith obtained her Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from The University of Virginia (UVA) in 1995 and was also the first African-American woman to do so.


Gregory Washington
The Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering, University of California, Irvine

Dr. Gregory Washington has served as Dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) since 2011. Under his leadership, the school has increased its faculty ranks and numbers of students. In 2015, he chaired UCI's Task Force on Ensuring a Positive Climate for the Campus's African American Community. His core area of research interest lies in the area of dynamic systems, with an emphasis on modeling and control of smart material systems and devices. Prior to joining UCI, he served as Interim Dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. Dr. Washington earned his MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Glenn Weckerlin
Director, University Partnerships and Association Relations, Chevron Corporation

Mr. Glenn Weckerlin oversees the international portfolio of University and Association Partnerships for Chevron Corporation. He and his team have worked to develop programs that ensure Chevron is recognized as a leader by actively embracing the diversity of people and ideas and fostering an inclusive work environment. Mr. Weckerlin received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, and holds a JD from Golden Gate University.
