How will we get to 50/50 by 2050?

WEPAN has a clear focus on promoting the use of research-based strategies to advance women in engineering, and this shapes the content WEPAN provides at its National Conference/Change Forum, the Women in STEM Knowledge Center, and in its Professional Development Webinars.

WEPAN further advances its work toward its overarching goal of 50/50 by 2050, by engaging many others in ongoing programs, funded projects, partnerships and relationships –all aimed at to achieving the core purpose or propelling higher education to increase the number and advance the prominence of diverse communities of women in engineering.

The ACE Initiative

The Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) is launching the Advancing Culture in Engineering (ACE) Initiative multi-year initiative to advance inclusive cultures in engineering. ACE will align industry and education to create positive academic, social and workforce cultures that retain and graduate many more underrepresented student engineers and meet corporate needs for a diverse, globally-competent workforce.  Improved communication, negotiation, innovation and effectiveness are inevitable. 

Engineering Inclusive Teaching, Faculty Professional Development Initiative

Three-year project to increase engineering faculty implementation of engineering education that is engaging and motivating to a diverse community of women students and their racial and ethnic minority male counterparts. The three-year, $375k grant is funded by the National Science Foundation.

ENGAGE, Engaging Students in Engineering

WEPAN is Co-Principal Investigator on ENGAGE, Engaging Students in Engineering. ENGAGE makes mini-grants to faculty who implement research-based classroom strategies known to improve student engagement and retention of engineering. The five-year, $2.5M project is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Dissemination of Research and Knowledge

 

Women in STEM Knowledge Center

Selected collection of 1,900+ resources that captures the body of knowledge on gender underrepresentation in STEM. Globally available, searchable, with links to resources.

WEPAN Professional Development Webinars

Produces well-attended, topical Professional Development webinars on research-base topics related to underrepresentation of women in STEM and maintains a globally-accessible archive or recorded webinars. Webinars are attended by nearly 2,800+ registrants from 380+ educational insitutions annually.

WEPAN National Conference / Change Forum

National conference focused on research-to-practice based advances in outreach, retention, and graduation of women in engineering and improving university culture to advance women in engineering.

Collaborations to Advance Diversity in Engineering

American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Corporate Member Council

The ASEE Corporate Member Council served as the incubator for diversity work within ASEE and links WEPAN to corporations that have a commitment to excellence in engineering education.

American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Diversity Committee

WEPAN is a founding member of this group that seeks to advance diversity through the membership of ASEE.

University of Colorado BOLD Center Advisory Council

The BOLD Center is an innovative, leading program nationally that seeks adoption of strategies and practices that promote the success of women and other underrepresented students in engineering. WEPAN contributes knowledge of root causes, interventions, and new strategies and gains a close view of the successes and challenges of systemic change.
