Overview of the Equity Environmental Scanning Tool (EEST)

Description
This document is a one-page overview of the Equity Environmental Scanning Tool (EEST), a free self-assessment resource for U.S. professional societies to evaluate and strengthen their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. It explains the tool’s purpose—stimulating internal conversations, benchmarking performance, identifying strengths and gaps, centralizing DEI data, and guiding actionable change. The overview outlines the EEST’s three parts:
- assessment across 12 core organizational functions,
- compositional diversity measures, and
- reflection on DEI progress, challenges, and priorities.
It also provides a suggested 17-month timeline for assembling a team, collecting data, completing the assessment, sharing results, and developing and implementing a DEI action plan.
