Lilen Uchima, Ph.D.

Dr. Lilen Uchima serves as the Assistant Dean for Academic Excellence and Professional Development programs at the MIT Office of Minority Education. In her role, Dean Uchima leads three signature programs that provide a supportive academic, personal and professional environment for all MIT students, with a particular focus on underrepresented minority students. In addition, she also serves as an advocate and academic advisor for first-year students as well as prospective graduate students. She also works directly with the Associate Dean and Director of the OME as the staff liaison to the Office of Minority Education Faculty Advisory Committee (OMEFAC).

As a graduate student at MIT, Dean Uchima cemented her passion to assist underrepresented minority, women, and students from other marginalized groups in their pursuit of science degrees in higher education by recruiting students to the graduate and summer programs of the MIT Biology department, designing and leading experimental workshops for local high school students, and helping design active learning modules taught at Haiti universities through the MIT-Haiti Initiative.
